I picked the Ecoflow RIVER 2 MAX because I have seen Ecoflow at CES multiple years and have always been impressed with their products. One year I had the chance at CES to check it out in person and was able to speak to the Ecoflow representation that was there for the event about it. Also, after doing a comparison between Ecoflow and their competitors [see the end chart] I felt the Ecoflow RIVER 2 MAX gave me the most for my money for the features and price range I was looking for.
So why did I buy it?
I had my eye on a portable power solution for a while because I use a Cpap machine while sleeping and nights without using the Cpap machine compounds in the negative each night i don’t use it. I enjoy the outdoors during the day but have gotten to the point where I dread the nights. So, I was excited to give the RIVER 2 Max a try and see if it worked with my Cpap machine.
A little about the Cpap I use for context. The Cpap machine is an Airsense 11 with reservoir, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi model. The power consumption is about 30 watts but can peak around 73 watts and voltages between 100V-240V.
So how has my experience been with the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max?
I took my EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max with portable solar panels on a multi-day camping trip in a middle of nowhere-ish area by a reservoir near Heber, Utah.
The EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max worked great! My Cpap machine was able to run all night long with the reservoir turned on, and the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max still had 10% battery left. This gave me a chance to use the solor panels to recharge the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max but I will give my experience with that later below. * After the first night I did check the settings on my Cpap to see if I could turn off some settings like wifi, bluetooth and other settings to try to conserve power usage luckily my cpap does have an “airplane mode” essentially and that did give me 4-7 more percentage availability after a nights usage depending on the nights temperature.
I also used the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max to keep me and my family’s smartphones charged. I was presently surprised with the efficiency and speed that the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max charged multiple smartphones, iPad and even Nintendo Switches.
At first, I was a little concerned about how the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max would work during the cold nights and the hot days because there was no real shade where we camped. But the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max didn’t seem to be affected by either, however I did try to use common sense and keep it out of the sun when I could.
When the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max gets too hot, it does kick on the built-in fan system which can be a little noisy, but none of my tentmates complained, nor has anyone complained when I have used the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max during long car rides.
I have also taken the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max on a couple of long truck rides, where the main use was to power a laptop and any smartphone/smart devices that also needed to be charged. Here the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max really shined; battery lasted the whole 6 hours that we were in the truck. Now I was playing Heroes 3 so ya …not a big power drain but since Heroes 3 is my go-to for that car ride it worked out for me. Once again, the fan noise was not a problem for me or those in the truck. The EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max heat exhaust does add to the warmth of the vehicle cabin though, but I had it hear my legs the whole time and it was never uncomfortable to me.
My experience with the EcoFlow NextGen 160W Portable Solar Panel was mixed, but I believe this is due mostly to the fact that I had upto that point never used solor panels before. With further use and learning on how to maximize the panels, my experience will improve.
Most of my frustration is getting a good position for the panels, I personally never got more than 135W even with pointing the 3 panels as directly to the sun as I could get. That said the panels never took more than 2-2.5 hours to charge the RIVER 2.
All in all, I have been very happy with the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max purchase.
**Full discloser***
I [and galactigeek] cannot guarantee that your experience will be the same, nor that if you also use a Cpap machine that it’s going to work with the RIVER 2 MAX. Id speak to your doctor about it and do your homework prior to the purchase like I did. I am just reporting MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. Also, I purchased the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max myself and was NOT provided it by EcoFlow, my experience is as a consumer.
