It’s the 21st century, but when it comes to checking on our powerlines, pipelines, and railways, we’re still flying around in helicopters like it’s 1974. Seriously, who thought burning a ton of fuel an hour to look at some wires was a sustainable long-term plan? Enter HyLight, a French startup that just raised a cool €13 million to change all that. Instead of noisy, gas-guzzling choppers, they’re using autonomous, hydrogen-powered airships. Yes, you read that right: hydrogen blimps. And they are already cruising the skies of Europe, doing the dirty work for major operators like a boss.

Zero Emissions, All the Range

Let’s talk about the hardware. HyLight’s star player is the “HyLighter,” a 12-meter-long airship that looks like a futuristic zeppelin and acts like an ultra-precise inspection platform. Because it’s electrically powered by hydrogen, it cruises with zero direct emissions and barely makes a peep.

This isn’t some short-hop drone, either. The HyLighter can fly for up to ten hours with a target range of 350 kilometers. It’s packed with up to 10 kg of high-tech sensors, including LiDAR, cameras, and methane detectors, meaning it can spot a problem with millimeter-level precision from 25 meters up. Best of all? They’re already cleared to fly beyond visual line of sight, even over populated areas.

The Brains Behind the Blimp

But HyLight isn’t just selling cool blimps; they’re selling infrastructure intelligence. All that data the HyLighter scoops up? HyLight uses AI to process it, automatically identifying and mapping out over 50 different types of defects or vegetation risks. Instead of handing maintenance teams thousands of raw photos and saying, “Good luck,” they provide precise, actionable insights.

Over time, all this data will create a massive digital twin of the infrastructure, which could have huge implications for everything from insurance to land management. They’re basically giving Europe’s power grid a super-smart checkup.

The HyLighter is ultra-lightweight, packed with sensors, and virtually silent

Scaling Up for the Future

With €13 million in fresh funding from investors like Rubio Impact Ventures and DRW, HyLight is ready to hit the gas (or, well, the hydrogen). They’re scaling up their fleet, aiming to have 15 HyLighters operating simultaneously by 2027, up from just four today. They’re also beefing up their team, hiring 50 new employees across engineering, AI, and operations.

With Europe’s infrastructure aging and climate change throwing new curveballs every year, an alternative to expensive, polluting helicopters is long overdue. HyLight isn’t just building cool tech; they’re building the future of infrastructure maintenance, one quiet, emission-free flight at a time.
