Ah, those age-old questions: “Mac or PC?” “Left-brained or Right-brained?” “Form or Function?” “Quality or Cheapskate?” “Apple or Android?” Marketing can go a long way to skew our opinions, but it really does just come down to how your brain works. I am the ultimate penny pincher, but I will never buy a PC or Android, because their interface is just incredibly counter-intuitive and frustrating for me to use; and I know plenty of people who feel the same way about Apple. Despite the great strides both have made over the years, there are still a few things that are a clear advantage one way or another.

What Android Does Better:

1. Choices

If you go with Apple your choices are an iPhone, a slightly nicer iPhone, an iPhone with a bit more storage, or a different colored iPhone. Enter Android. You can get anything from a glorified kids toy for ten bucks to the newest Galaxy for significantly more than even the iPhone. Do you want great speakers? There’s a phone for that. The best screen for video viewing? There’s a phone for that. A high quality camera? There’s a phone for that too. Plus some competition even within the Android camp naturally leads to better hardware across the board such as superior durability and speedy charging.

2. Customization

With Android, the sky is the limit when it comes to changing the interface to fit your exact preferences. With widgets and launchers and endless apps to set up your phone, every Android can have an experience that is entirely unique. Sure, you can jailbreak an iPhone, but let’s face it, all you’re really doing there is turning it into an Android in Apple clothing. Beyond software, most Androids even allow hardware changes like adding extra storage, replacing the battery or opening it up to troubleshoot problems without the need for a “genius.”

3. Google Hangouts

I know, Hangouts has nothing on FaceTime and iMessage. We’ll get to that later. A good portion of Android users don’t even use this clunky app, but it is incredibly useful for a specific purpose. If you are on a pay-as-you-go plan, it is a dream for calling and texting over WiFi. There are other apps out there, but none come close. Hangouts is the only app that lets you easily call and text any phone number for free. Even installing Hangouts on an iPhone isn’t going to get you the same versatility as having it automatically blended with your regular SMS and calling apps. No being limited to people who have the same app as you, no fees for calling landlines, and no switching back and forth to different phone numbers depending on if you are on WiFi or using minutes.

4. Cloud Storage

iCloud tries, but it has nothing on Google Drive. Even most Apple users have a Google account, and you just can’t beat having it seamlessly integrated with your phone.

What Apple Does Better:

1. Continuity

From app to app and device to device, an Apple product always has a very distinct feel to it. Google Play opens their doors to anyone who wants to try their hand at app design, but Apple makes sure any app by any developer still looks and functions basically the same way. Family sharing makes it so you don’t have to buy an app again for each device, Airdrop makes sending pictures and files to another Apple device a snap, and Handoff lets you start a task on your phone and easily continue it on your computer or iPad.

2. Convenience

What Apple lacks in do-it-yourself, it makes up for in you-don’t-have-to. Everything just works. And even when it doesn’t, their customer service and support are fantastic. You can go into an Apple store and have a problem fixed in minutes that would take weeks of back and forth and waiting by the mailbox for an Android. And that’s just the hardware. When it comes to software updates, what is a nightmare waiting game for Android users isn’t even a passing thought for an iPhone owner. Unless you have a Google phone, it can take months before a new OS is tweaked for your specific phone, if they get around to it at all. Apple, on the other hand, sends you updates instantly. Even third party apps are almost always available for the iPhone long before Androids.

3. FaceTime and iMessage

iOS 10 saw some incredibly fun updates to iMessage — doodling on pictures, handwritten messages, screen effects, website previews, integrated stickers and GIFs, Facebook-style reactions to texts and watching videos or playing games without having to switch to another app. FaceTime has some of the best video and audio of any calling app. Best of all, both can be used from any Apple device, including an iPad or computer. Some of the functionality can only be used from Apple to Apple, but not enough to get in the way.

4. Security and Privacy

Apple goes above and beyond to make sure their users are protected. A big part of the problem for Android is the difficulty in updating the software. Malware can still be actively harming users years after new software comes out, just because Android users are more likely to still be using the older versions. The open app marketplace also opens doors to threats. The best security feature on iPhones is the Touch ID. While some Android phones have similar technology, none even come close to the speed and reliability of Apple’s.

Conclusion

Apple spends a lot of time and energy making sure everything works just right straight out of the box without you even having to think about it. However, if you are the kind of person who likes to think about it, Android has the ultimate customizability.
