By now, you’ve probably heard of Alexa, Amazon’s version of the personal digital assistant. She is featured on the Amazon Echo, and more recently the Echo Dot and the Amazon Tap. In case you live under a rock, here’s the gist: it’s a speaker with voice commands. Ask the time, play some music, add an appointment to your calendar, and “Alexa” will respond. So it’s Siri? It’s just Siri.

Not exactly—Alexa does respond much more quickly and accurately. But come on, who doesn’t have a phone with either Siri or Google Now? “But Alexa can control third party apps” you say. Yeah, so can  Google Now, and Siri will with the next update. That’s the thing, tech companies will always be fighting to keep up with each other, so anything Alexa can do, your phone apps won’t be far behind. The major advantage that Alexa has is the powerful speaker, but there are plenty of bluetooth speakers you can connect to your current device.

I’m not saying it’s a bad purchase, but I certainly wouldn’t shell out an extra $180 for a gadget I already have in my pocket. Especially if someone in your family is already named Alexa. Didn’t think that one through, did we Amazon?
